For fans of THC – we’re living in something of a golden time. If Delta 8, 9, or even 10 wasn’t enough for you already – there’s yet another THC-derived product that’s making waves on the scene. Say hello to THC-Oa.
Short for THC-O Acetate, THC-O is yet another cannabinoid derived from the, as of 2018, federally legal hemp plant (thanks Farm Bill). While of the same family unit, THC-O does not occur ‘naturally’ in Hemp plants – it was first created in the 1970s and is a product made by isolating certain compounds found in Delta 8.
‘Acetating’ is a chemical process – and THC-O can be created as an acetate side-product of either Delta 8 or Delta 9. The key difference? THC-O is thought to be up to 300% times stronger than Delta 9 and up to 500% the strength of Delta 8.
While moderate doses of the substance can produce a euphoric high similar to that of a product like Delta 9 – THC-O is also known to induce psychedelic (read hallucinogenic) effects in users. Let’s just say when it comes to THC-O – we’re not in Kansas anymore Dorothy.
Why is THC-O becoming more popular?
With the ever-increasing growth in popularity of hemp derivatives like delta 8 and delta 9 – it was simply a matter of time before users started to experiment with new ways to chase that high. The psychedelic and hallucinogenic properties also hold a natural appeal to those who are interested in exploring their ‘inner spaces’ just that little bit more.
Once again we can take the legal space left open by the Farm Bill as a cause for more experimentation here. With commercial producers able to experiment on a wider scale, it left a clear path open to a marketplace of willing users.
Is THC-O natural?
Unlike CBD or other naturally occurring cannabinoids, THC-O is a synthetic product, usually made in the lab. While you won’t find THC-O in the cannabis plant itself, it is a synthesized by-product of delta 8 or delta 9 substances.
While this might sound a little intimidating, the process of creating substances fit for human consumption in such environments is nothing new, and THC-O when produced tends to come in a thick oil-like substance with little flavor or odor to it, making it a good base for the usual range of products you know and love – from vape oils to edibles.
Unlike delta 8 and 9, or CBD, there’s much less documented evidence of the potential medical benefits of THC-O. A lack of research is the primary reason here, though anecdotal reports about the sensations THC-O can produce are widely available.
The ‘Trippy’ Cannabinoid
As mentioned above – THC-O has been described as being up to x3 and x5 more potent than the equivalent highs associated with delta 8 and delta 9. While the dose you take will have a significant impact, THC-O is unique among cannabinoids for its ability to produce a significant psychedelic experience for users.
For folks who are interested in the potential ‘spiritual’ benefits of this kind of high, THC-O holds a unique attraction, but for those looking for a more casual (read traditional) kind of high, it’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into before imbibing too much of this particular hemp derivative.
It’s fair to say that the more casual user may get a little more than they were expecting from THC-O – so we advise you to be cautious with initial experiments until you are comfortable with your own boundaries and response.
